Giant Origami – first attempt
Posted on Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 at 10:38 pmOkay, so a few months ago, I thought I saw a 3ft tall origami giraffe in a window. It ended up being a coat rack, but since then I’ve been wanting to try my hand at large origami.
Below is my adventure is creating a large shark based on this plan
1. Get some large paper. Since it was my first attempt, I went with some nifty paper I found at Blick. After cutting off the extra bits it was 19.5″ square.

2. Make lots of folds. I quickly learned that large origami folds need to be gently coaxed into position. The nice part, though, was that the large size made mistakes easier to see. This picture is from just before I really started messing up. The poor shark’s tail got all mangled.

3. After realizing that the dorsal fin had ended up tucked inside his body, I did some origami surgery. I don’t think he noticed. There was lots of anesthesia involved. In the end, it ended up being 15″ long nose to tail and entirely adorable. He currently lives in front of the printer.
